A dying Winding Constrictor and Meren of Clan Nel Toth's Trigger

Asked by MilliNox 8 years ago

I'm having Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Viscera Seer and Winding Constrictor in play. I'm saccing the Constrictor to the Seer to Scry 1. Meren's Ability triggers because of a dying creature. But would Winding Constrictor's Ability Trigger too, giving me 2 instead of 1 Exp. Counter?

I would say 'no', since it already has left the battlefield. Am I wrong about this? Is this probably a case of rule 603.6d?

No.

First, Winding Constrictor's abilities are static abilities that define replacement effects. They only function while Winding Constrictor is on the battlefield. Not only do they stop applying the moment Winding Constrictor is gone, they are long over by the time Meren of Clan Nel Toth's ability resolves.

603.6d states that some abilities, such as dies triggers, look back in time to determine whether they trigger. This doesn't mean that they preserve the game state from that point and resolve as though it were still that point in time.

You will not get the additional experience counter.

Meren has a triggered ability, and from it triggering, being put on the stack, and eventually resolving, there's a lot of time - when the ability resolves, that Snake is already in the graveyard, unable to affect anything with it's replacement effect. 603.6d refers to things that happen at the very same time, meaning if all three mentioned creatures here would die at the same time, Meren would still trigger twice, even though she's not on the battlefield anymore.

Thx!

Was pretty sure about that, but couldn't really substantiate it when it happened :)
