Tymaret in standard

Standard forum

I have a very strong feeling that Tymaret, the Murder King is going to have a huge impact on the standard format at some point during this block. If Theros block comes out with some good token generation then I think this is a guarantee, and this could essentially be the next aristocrats deck. With the black/red scry land coming out in born of the gods it may be this next one but we'll see. What do you all think about this, is the card as good as I think or does the fact that he is legendary make him unplayable?

The two threads had different titles, which means they were manually posted as separate threads.

Regardless, there would probably need to be some strong, cheap B/R token production to make the idea viable. Otherwise, Tymaret, the Murder King will be little more than an attrition card.

Tymaret is a really nice idea but with an ability like his, you need to build the deck around it because it's not easy to utilise effectively in a 'normal' deck. Like Epoch said it probably requires a heavy token framework (or at least - expendable creatures), which means that he's quite unsupported in standard currently due to the fact that there isn't any heavy token production except maybe Assemble the Legion but it's out of colour somewhat and a 5-drop... and bad.

notamardybum I agree that at the moment he seems more suited for EDH at the moment but i have faith

@Epo I hit back in an attempt to cancel the first post didn't work obviously. So I'll be more conscious next time. My B.

Glad we agree on something, and that is what I'm hoping for with these next sets because who doesn't love tokens

He is really good in Rakdos aggro lists when the opponent stabilizes and you want to chump block stuff and ping off damage while preventing it.

That's what I think, too. Against midrange decks it might be good to deal extra damage since u can't get past their crits.

It's definitely not competitive-worthy, but I'm putting together a casual deck with him and Portent of Betrayal -like cards. He's definitely fun, but not quite there yet.

Run him in a mostly human deck with the Necromancer dude and every time you chump block you do 2dmg and get a 2/2 zombie :D

If you ran strictly 2 drop creatures, you could use Immortal Servitude to bring back all of your creatures after you sack them. Mix this in with some devotion cards like Burning-Tree Emissary and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and you may have a "combo deck" going. Don't know how competitive it will be but it's at least a start
