Question about a combo I keep seeing

Apologies if this is in the wrong Thread.

The cards in question (Or combo) isSunbond + Sage of Hours

Now correct me if i'm wrong but I think Sunbond is being misunderstood as "put" is not the same as "target" correct?

I've just been seeing a few decks with this "Combo" and i'm pretty sure it doesn't work out that way.

It's just for peace of mind and curiosity's sake.

Correct. Plus if you're trying to activate the heroic on Sage of Hours . You need to cast a spell that targets. The key is casting, equip targets but does not trigger heroic. In short effects and abilities the target do not trigger heroic.

But it works out this way, they cast sunbond and target sage of hours, his heroic triggers. Now if they have a lifegain engine in there, each time they gain life, the sunbond triggers, now when they get to 5, they can remove it and take a turn and if they have a way to gain life infinitely (incremental not in one shot, which most are), they can essentially take infinite turns with this.

This is more synergy than combo, but a lot of people mistake the two also.

The combo isn't targeting the Sage of Hours multiple times, it's the +1/+1 counters that allow it to take extra turns. I'm assuming you also see some Ordeal of Heliod type effects? Because that combination of cards could let you target the sage twice (once with Sunbond once with Ordeal of Heliod ), attack once (assuming the Sage of Hours was cast previously), and sacrifice the Ordeal of Heliod , giving you a 13/13 sage who, after combat, can give you two free turns.

Sunbond + Sage of Hours is NOT a combo. It's just synergy. The more life you gain, the more counters get put on Sage of Hours since for every point of life gained, 1 counter is put on the Sage. If you gain 5 life, Sage gets 5 counters, and you get an extra turn.

Ninja'd. Also, correction, 1/1 sage with 13 +1/+1 counters would be 14/14.

Goddamn, double ninja'd.

As others have stated, it's not the triggering of the ability that put's counters on it, but the resolution.

Just curious because i'm working on a deck involving Sage of Hours (Back to the Future! (Infinite turns) ) and I was looking at this combo kinda confused.

Totally works since your just stockpiling +1/+1 counters.

GoldGhost012 Just and FYI and minor, but important, nitpick, it's not for each point, but each instance. You don't get 2 counters for playing Kitchen Finks only 1.

I see. I have been lied to. I must rectify this mistake.

gufymike that's how I understand it.

It's a counter for each time you gain life. Not each life gained.

According to the first ruling in gatherer you would get a +1/+1 counter for each life gained not just each instance. So you would get 2 counters for kitchen finks.

  • In some unusual cases, you can gain life even though your life total actually decreases. For example, if you are being attacked by two 3/3 creatures and you block one with a 2/2 creature with lifelink, your life total will decrease by 1 even though youve gained 2 life. Youll put two +1/+1 counters on the enchanted creature.

So it is for every 1 life gained it's a +1/+1 for the Sunbonded Sage

I guess I'm wrong. I missed the 'put that many counters'. Better than I thought. :)
