Will Clue and Food Tokens Return?

Spoilers, Rumors, and Speculation forum

Treasure tokens first appeared in the Ixalan block, but have appeared in many sets since then, likely because they are popular, so I naturally am wondering if clue and food tokens shall eventually return, since I feel that they still have much unexplored potential.

What does everyone else say about this? Will clue and food tokens eventually return?

It's a little (read: a lot) harder to fit clues and food thematically into a plane than it is treasure, so it may take longer than it did for treasure to get a reprise for those others.

I like clue tokens more than food tokens, but having more ways to generate artifact tokens I like a lot as it helps with metalcraft, improvise, city’s blessing, revolt, affinity and a lot of other quirky cards.

@Omniscience_is_life, personally I think implementing both tokens would be easy for any plane to implement if necessary. Food as a concept should be found on every plane. Working food into spells might be something else as it may be weird to justify how a lightning spell or a kill spell makes a food item, but there are ways to get creative about it such as having vampires produce food tokens where the “food” is depicted in artwork as goblets of blood. Clues I think are much easier, because all you need to do is tie heavy mystery elements into the story taking place on the plane and now any kind of spell could easily be worked into the plot while also providing clue tokens.

StopShot but that's exactly what I'm saying--they need to worked around, ergo they're harder to put into play just anywhere. No canonical relevancy need be applied to Treasure

I agree with Omni about relevance.

You need a story behind why you use clues or food. You don't with treasure tokens. It is a lot more difficult to vindicate the other two when compared to the vanilla identify of Treasure tokens.

Treasure tokens are much more readily slotted into a new theme, new world, or a new story.

MagicMarc, I agree with you about clue tokens, but I disagree about food tokens, since the majority of beings and characters in fiction are living creatures who require sustenance to live, so food tokens can easily fit into nearly any setting.

I see and like your logic. But providing lifegain forces story or forces color pie decisions which complicates design space.

You really won't run into that with Treasure is all I was saying.

There has to be a story/theme for clues and food but not quite as much for Treasure. That just makes it less likely for the other two to appear in future sets when compared to Treasure tokens.

I agree with Omniscience_is_Life. Treasures are more flexible to put in different planes, while food is more specific to Throne of Eldraine. I think clues will likely not come back soon, due to the genius invention of shards, (which scry in addition to drawing a card, and first were introduced in Kaldheim).

Mtg_Mega_Nerds, the only difference is that shard tokens are enchantments, so they likely shall appear only in sets that have an enchantment theme, which Kladheim does not have, but that is because they are generated by Niko Aris, who is from Theros.

Food tokens have returned in Strixhaven,_or more accurately, in _Commander 2021, which is related to Strixhaven, about which I am very glad, so, hopefully, clue tokens shall eventually return, as well.
