HELP! I suck at sealed
Limited forum

So I'm going to the GPT for London and decided on doing sealed as I'm paranoid that someone may see my list and plan against me for the constructed event, but I always get flustered with sealed decks... Only in rtr block was I able to do anything that resembled a playable sealed deck. I need tips and tricks for magic origins sealed...
HELP!!!

I agree with J above in going a few rounds with some friends and have them look at what you build...that's where I always learn the most about a sealed environment. It may also be helpful to look at some online articles- there are many MTG sites out there that analyze cards and deck builds for sealed. For example, there is a strategy 'baked' into each color pair in Origins that can kind of guide your deck building.
Finally, feel free to ask. Many players in communities like this one would be happy to help you if you have questions about certain strategies, individual cards, or even our sealed experiences. I know Origins was an interesting sealed experience for me, that's for sure.

Now, if you're looking for specific tips, you're going to have to ask specific questions. I feel pretty confident at Origins limited, consistently Top 8'ing Draft FNM and just finishing up a Sealed PPTQ at top 16 (missed out on Top 8 by Tiebreakers). Plus I'm sure others here or your friends can help you as well.

Well, let's start. What exactly about sealed gets you flustered? Why do you feel RTR was a success and the others were failures?

Heh, as you may be able to tell, I kind of favor Golgari as well...
Well, you know what your shortcoming is, and that is step 1. Work on how to not fall into that trap next time. If you have some packs and some folks around, try building other colors and see what shakes out. Learn how to spot the two-color strategies for Origins. Get out of your comfort zone.

Let's do this, how about you make a Sealed pool and show it to us. Then in a separate decklist, make the deck you would make with the cards available. Then golgarigirl and I can see what you made and how we might make the pool differently.

There are some sites that allow you to generate simulated sealed pools or simulated packs. Use those to practice.

@ Epochalyptik, you realize Tappedout can do this... You just go to the set in the Cards menu, then there's a Create Sealed Deck button.

Our Origins spoiler is also at 262/272. The set is incomplete here.

Not to Necro the thread, but I just put in my sealed pool from the 1st. tyforthevenom, try and build a sealed deck from this pool and link it here.

Could you post the decklist? That way we can give you some more advice?

Also, explain to us how you came to arrive at those two colors? What were your signals (what cards made you go 'yes, this is what I'm playing')?

this list and it's mostly coz my drafts in b/w for the set always seem to work better than any of the other combinations

Looking at the draft pool, I immediately ruled out green. And then I realized that the only reason I didn't rule out white right away was your deck. I think you trying to stay in your comfort zone (because it 'always seems to work best') might cloud your vision to what's in front of you (or, in this case, decidedly not in front of you). White's strengths in most sets are flyers and removal. This pool is very light on all of those. White here has little of it's strengths: 1 decent flyer in Charging Griffin, 1 good removal piece in Suppression Bonds. Are those two cards enough to lock you in to white?
I do think black was a good call (4 kill spells and the Priest of the Blood Rite are what are known as 'signals'...cards that make you really, really want to play a color), but I'm a bit mystified at what you left out of the deck. Specifically the 2 Cruel Revival and the Nantuko Husk. Removal is always at a premium in sealed, and that your deck has access to 4 kill spells is amazing. It is a little mana taxing, but if we can make our deck curve out at 5, with a Priest and 4 kill spells, we are in great shape. And don't be intimidated by the 'non-zombie' clause...there are all of 5 creatures in the set that thing can't kill, all of which are in black, and most of which are 2/Xs you probably won't care much about anyways. As for the Husk...that ability will give your opponent headaches, I promise. Plus you can bring it back with your Cruel Revival!

Husk was left out because I wouldn't usually have a decent enough board state to make good use of it and white has good early drops which is important for origins or so I keep getting told

Just for shiggles, here's what I made out of the pool:

Think of husk as a 2/2 for 3 that, if you have another creature, has (in your opponent's mind) a pump spell whenever it will blow them out the hardest. The proper board state to abuse him is specifically 'I control him and at least one other creature'.
Then again, I am biased towards husks. :P

Sorry, apparently I copypasta'd your deck somehow...is there a way to delete posts?

Anyways...GG's Sealed Pool Deck

So, interestingly enough, I chose not to play Black. While it did have 2x Cruel Revival and Unholy Hunger it did not have the early interaction I want in this format. This format can be quick and you need to be able to stop the deck that goes T2: Topan Freeblade, T3: Attack, cast Citadel Castellan. Instead I went with this deck.

I went artifacts off of the back of Harbinger of the Tides, Pia and Kiran Nalaar, and Thopter Spy Network. Now I did this mainly so I could get the use out of my rares. Mom & Dad are a HOUSE and if you get Thopter Spy Network going, it's near unstoppable. Plus this deck had the most 2 drops and 3 drops, spell slots which I highly value in Origins limited.
Also, in both of your builds, you are running some very suboptimal cards. Thornbow Archer is not a card I want to be running in Sealed unless I opened 6 of them. Similarly, I'm never happy running a Maritime Guard. Akroan Jailer has not impressed me too much and just wastes my turns. There is an argument for playing him in Sealed, but even then I'm not sold on it.
And again, with this deck I went 4-2 at a 6 round PPTQ to get Top 16. I'm not saying that my build was correct, but I did have other people at the event say that they would have built a deck similar to my own.

Admittedly I was thinking of blue/red as a good build as well. Any of the Grixis colors were really strong in the pool.

The biggest tip I can give, is you need to be prepared for an aggro deck blowing you out. But Origins is basic Magic, play creatures on a curve, play removal spells, and play pump spells. You can also listen to Limited Resources who should be doing a Sealed deck episode soon.
I would also recommend you build some test Sealed decks and ask your friends how they would build it to see if you all agree.
