Foil White Borders

So I know a large part of the mtg community has a thing against white bordered cards but I absolutely love them. My question is why did WotC use black borders for the foils in white bordered sets? I'd almost kill for a white bordered 7th Edition foil Birds of Paradise

Do players really complain about white bordered cards? I've never heard someone say anything negative about them. Is this a local thing you have noticed, or is it something you are seeing crop up on like Reddit?

TypicalTimmy it’s defo a thing - everyone has their own preference for card art. I’m personally not a fan of the white card borders, or the old-card-frames they’ve been re-exploring lately - and generally avoid playing with either if I can avoid it.

My guess is it has something to do with printing templating (not sure if that is a correct term). They don't want to produce additional template for a set that happens only once every two years (at the time core set was still white bordered).

jethstriker I'm pretty sure they had already made all of the necessary changes simply by switching the border color.

shadow63 I'm aware of what the border colors mean and that only begs the question all the more of why they switched it for foils. 7th and 8th edition were white bordered sets but the foils from those sets had black borders instead of white like the regular cards.

They printed the foils in black border because those cards had never been printed in foil before.

When I first learned about the game, many moons ago, white borders were cast off as mere reprints..

White borders also became soiled far faster & easier... for obvious reasons..

Personally, I like them. For one, they are always cheaper than their counterparts. So if you are not in the market to proxy, it's a good alternative to help save some money.

Secondly, spice is the variety of life. Personally, I enjoy mixing things up in the deck. I will go out of my way to find printings with color alterations that I prefer, assuming money isn't an issue or if I enjoy the deck so much I want to "bling" it out.

It's no different, in my opinion, from gold bordered cards. While yes I know that gold cards are illegal due to having a different back, it is easily able to be argued that,

  • If you are okay with a proxy, you should be okay with a gold card. Neither have TRUE wotc / mtg backs

  • A gold card is at least PRINTED by wotc. Therefore, it is a step higher than a proxy

As long as you use sleeves, and the sleeves are opaque enough that you can not see through them, I think gold are fine.

So, personally, I am okay with all three (black, white and gold). I don't play competitively, so there is nothing at stake for me if I lose, such as prize money.

I am also okay with proxies, though I personally prefer to own the card. But the game is so expensive and thus has such a high barrier to entry that I feel it is in the community's best interest to be pro-proxy. Otherwise we shun the less financially fortunate, whether it is because they have lower incomes or because they have higher priorities, or both.

Cde0- I don't think that is it 7ED had foil Birds of Paradise , but the 8ED foil is black border. I know that they changed the art in between, but the same would be true of the normal print and it is white border.
