Chalice of the Void clarification

I have a question about Chalice of the Void , how does this card work with my deck. I play it in an Izzet mind control/burn deck, and I sideboard this card against other burn decks. Recently, I got into a discussion about how a Chalice of the Void affected my spells. If I play it with 1 counter on it, does that mean, because of the wording, that all of my 1 drop spells get countered too? If so, I'm not sure this card is worth the $5 it is listed at. Does anyone have a definitive answer for this, I looked online but didn't turn up much. The card just says anytime a player casts a spell. Thanks for any insight you may be able to provide! Links are welcome too

My insight is this doesn't belong in General as it is a rule question and belongs in MTG Q&A.

P.S. the Sheagals suck!

Yes all spells regardless of caster or controller that are 1 cmc will be countered. Its best used in decks that build around it and use it to hurt other decks.

If you want to sideboard against burn decks, there are better ways to do so. One of the most hilarious ways is with Dragon's Claw which can retard the burn deck sufficiently.

Challace is actually seen in some vintage decks where putting it on zero counters moxes and lotuses or on one to shut down stuff like Ancestral Recall and other mana ramp. It also shows up in weird modern decks and I'd imagine even in legacy it could see some play.

Chalice of the Void counters ALL spells with that converted mana cost, including your own.

Even though it also hoses you, if you're playing it right it hoses your opponent much more. Burn decks, for example, run a very large amount of 1-drop spells, and without them they can't do much to you. The same goes for decks like ANT in Legacy.

It looks like, from what I can glean, that Chalice of the Void can only counter spells with even-numbered CMC. Basically, you pay X twice and let's say X is 2. Then you have 4 charge counters on the Chalice, so you could counter cars that had exactly 4 CMC because X would be 2 and you paid 2 twice, putting the 4 counters on the Chalice. If you had a way to remove 3 of the counters then cast Lightning Bolt , it would counter your Lightning Bolt, the same as it would counter theirs because it says "whenever a player," not "whenever an opponent."

So, in short, your one-drops would be countered, but so would theirs. You'd just have to find a way to remove the counters from the Chalice.

No, thats not how xx spells work. You pay x twice. so 2 for 1 CMC, 4 for 2 CMC and so on.

First, don't post your threads to multiple forums.

Second, rules questions should be posted in the Q&A. You'll find the link in the header bar.
