Selling cards at a shop?

I have a Verdant Catacombs and a foil Temple of Silence plus a few other rares $2+
I doubt I will ever use these cards and want to sell them at a local shop to get cash and buy stuff I actually need. What I was was wondering, was will most card shops give you the full value of the cards? Or am I better of trying something else...?

In my experience shops will not give anything over 50% in cash. Different shops do different things with their store credit but you'll get more than cash for trade-ins.

I think it's pretty common for shops to do 25% value for cash, and 50% value for store credit.

Stores give pretty terrible returns. I prefer trading with all you fuckers. Most of you are decent people. I've only had one problem in my time trading here.

You're shop must either be really well off or not great with business stuff Caligula, because buying things at 75% value is really high for any resale store.
My LGS gives 40% on cash and 60% credit (more if you haggle a bit for a trade) and from what I've seen that's better than most places. I would just take it to a couple shops and see what you can get if you're looking for other cards you need, or sell it online if you need the cash.

Well, The owner it's a side buisness for them and they get some major buisness there.
Im fairly certain that it's only 75% store credit though.

I sold a couple of legacy staples on craigslist pretty quickly and they were played/lightly played but i sold them for near mint prices. He said he paid the difference because he didn't have to wait for shipping.
That's always an option.

Rule of thumb, the more legwork you do the more you approach the retail value of the card. If you take the time to put up ads on Craigslist, track down someone to trade with, etc it's going to get you much closer to full value. Your LGS needs to make a profit and is taking on the risk of the price changing before they can resell it, so you're not going to get close to full value.
Every store differs a bit, but it roughly fall around 75% of the value if you're willing to take store credit and 50% of the value if you want the cash.

Caligula 75% store credit is pretty common from what I've seen. Tends to make both parties happy since the customer gets more value and the store knows they just make further profit off those purchases anyways.

Most stores don't give a whole lot. For cash the lgs I go to gives 50% in store credit and like 15% in cash. They usually try and work deals with you though if your needing stuff. The other lgs in the next county gives 15% store credit and 10% in cash. If your looking to sell it's usually better to sell straight to other players and avoid the stores all together unless you have a great lgs that works with people on deals.. That's just my personal experience though.

Thanks for all the answers! I will take the cards to a few shops and see what they say. I didn't even think of Craigslist :p

My lgs does 50% of the low value for cash and 80% for store credit I believe they use TCG or Star City for their prices.

KnightsBattlecry001 Wow, who would ever actually sell to those stores? "That sure is a nice Tarmogoyf here's $20 for it." That seems crazy low especially when you can ship them off to the buy list online for nearly the same effort.

A lot of the time eBay / Craigslist is the best way to go.

If (and that's a very big if) I sell to a store, I get around 60% cash, 80% store credit. Then again, that could be because it's HotSauceGames, which is one of the biggest online magic sellers.

But yeah, what ChiefBell said. Go the personal route. Hell, even Craigslist could work.

Actually, unless you get lucky and run into a person who doesn't know what they're doing on craigslist, buylisting is generally the best way to unload cards from a perspective of time/value. Ebay/tcgplayer have fees (unless you're a hardcore seller in the case of ebay) that quickly eat into your sales.
This is assuming you're buylisting to well known stores who can afford to offer a little bit better rates. But also "shop" around! For example, I was thinking of unloading my foil Terminus s and was disappointed to find the two shops I looked at buying them for around 10. But I found one well know place buying them for 18.

No, they won't. However some shops will give more value than others so pitch your cards to a few different shops before you sell them, if you decide to. Could also use this site/people at your lgs to trade those cards and get equal value.
