TBW Transformers deck help

Deck Help forum

I want to build a 60 card deck around the new Transformers cards. In my minds eye its a deck that uses all the transformers but I realize that probably won't synergize well but would like to get as close as possible. I play kitchen table magic and don't care about banned cards or staying within certain blocks, just not spending hundreds of $$$ on cards and sticking to the 4 copy limit. Looking for ideas to utilize as many of the TF cards as possble. Building around all 5 colors most likely since they use different colors on each transformer. I love playing but have never been very good at creating decks so I thought I would ask the experts. Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately, in a 60-card deck I can't offer too much advice, other than go with modular. I've had success in multi-color pile-ups using Arcbound Worker, Arcbound Shikari, and the like. Since all the Transformers are artifact creatures, they can utilize these +1/+1 counters. Additionally, you can use Blasting Station for a bit of added damage, so that your Blitzwing and Megatron get very large very quickly.

If you wanted to scope out a Commander deck, I'd recommend Ramos, Dragon Engine at the helm, as it's WUBRG and has +1/+1 synergy.

Happy trails!

One thing I will mention is add you add more colours to a deck, it becomes increasingly hard/impossible to have that deck remain cheap/affordable. It’s super-easy to build a 2-colour deck on a budget. It’s a LOT harder to build a decent 3-colour deck on a budget. Trying to play 4-5 colours on a budget feels like a recipe for disaster.

I’d suggest trying to narrow down what you actually want the deck to do. “Playing transformer cards” isn’t an actual plan, as they all do vastly different things. So what’s the actual gameplan you’re wanting to achieve here? I’d suggest focusing around 2-3 cards that synergise well with each-other.

HMMMM....OK.....I'll chew on that for a bit. I'm just a HUGE Transformer junky and was beyond excited to see these and want to play them. I'd consider a commander deck but no one really in my play group plays Commander. Maybe I could make 2 or 3 decks around some of them.

They synergize better than you'd think, actually. Just leave out Arcee and Goldbug, run 2 copies of each card, 1 copy of each signet, sit down and have fun. You can figure out more supports and add-ins once you get a feel for how these guys really interact and how you want to play them.

Two copies of each transformer ok, when you say signets are you referring to some new TBW ones or the old Ravnica ones? Dimir, izzet etc to name a few. What about the double return lands like Dimir Aquaduct etc?

Yes, dimir- golgari- rakdos- signet etc. Two-drop mana rocks that make color. Primarily because, for instance, Ratchet with his 'bring back artifact with cmc equal or less than life gained' ability, and his life-link with 2 power, starts off limited to to a target like that (or one of the few other Tfs with that low a cmc). It gets fun when you boost his power with other TF abilities like optimus or blaster, but still, you want to reliably have something to target, and you want reliably to have ramp, and color fixing, and so many other things. They are also just cheap (mana wise, and money wise) and well rounded and straightforward to throw into a five color deck. But again, feel free to find other things to put in instead, that is simply a simple and rounded starting point.

The bounce lands I do not like in a five color deck. It becomes too easy to end up with a hand of lands you can't get onto the field because all of them bounce each other. They are great when you have a smaller number of colors. And if you wanted to run just a few of them, that would be fine. But stay away from having 10 of your 24 lands bounce.

Here's what I have put together so far. I'm open to suggestions but atleast in my minds eye it looks like it will work. It's probably still weak against a red burn or control/mill but my playgroup doesn't often play those types of decks. Its a casual kitchen table group anyway so I just want something fun and creative....certainly not looking at it for a competition deck. But, would love to hear any ideas for improvement.

Even with the Signets I just don’t see you reliably getting the colours you need. Only having 20 lands probably worsens your situation.

I’d really suggest cutting back to 2-3 colours.

So, I played a few games last night with the deck listed above. Now, in all fairness, disclaimer here, I am still waiting for about 12 cards to show up so its not a full deck. It played surprisingly well. The transformers are working pretty well together. The only one that I didn't get much use out of was Soundwave. I either need to modify a few things to make him useful or just remove him all together. Signets worked really well and only had one game that mana was just being an asshole. All in in all I went 3/7 with it missing a large part of its mana base. I can live with that. Most importantly, its a rocking good time to play and had a ball with it. That makes it a win in my book. Not going to be a tournament winner but its so diverse and fun to play. Ill update you when I get the rest of the cards and see how it goes when its ALL there LOL.
