I am running a cruel control deck and I am undecided on whether to run Negate or Countersquall What is your guy's opinions? Here is the deck: Fiends of Grixis

My experience with Countersquall has been very positive. I have never drawn it and said "I sure wish this were a Negate right now."

Of course, adding the second color requirement is a risk, but if your land base is reliable then I see no reason to choose Negate over Countersquall.

In a control deck, Negate is probably better since you are planning on winning the long game and you shouldn't be too worried about squeezing out every point of life.

But like Eretoryi said, If you manabase can easily support Countersquall, it is obviously better than Negate.

I mostly agree with you, tclaw12. One benefit of adding the life loss counterspell to a Cruel Control deck is that it makes it even more viable to kill your opponent with burn. I actually win quite a few games with Snapcaster Mage and Lightning Bolt.

That makes sense. I've only looked at Countersquall from the Esper point of view where burning your opponent out isn't an option. Also Esper probably has a harder time casting the than Grixis does.

If you're mana base is set the c way it should be, then I feel like Countersquall is the better choice for sure
