The Four of Eldraine

Commander (EDH) forum

So I have a policy that every non-commander based set (meaning a set that isn't designed as a premade deck for commander, brawl or similar formats), there are 4 commanders that will be great or unique commanders. So I'm putting these up as my 4 for Eldraine. (Note: these aren't necessarily super powerful, but they're definitely what I call the most interesting options)

  1. Ayara, First of Lochthwain- The best new monoblack commander for any kind of token spamming deck. The first creature I could think of was Purphoros, God of the Forge .

  2. Kenrith- Generally group hug isn't considered in non supplemental sets. But this is one of the better ones in terms of gameplay. And the abilities are a lot more interesting than most, primarily since any black ability on a hug creature is generally just a slug option, instead of a reanimation option.

  3. Tarborn - ok, this seems like a bland red ability, but in reality the fact that it's a replacement ability that generally is reserved for non legendary permanents and now allows you to have a good effect in the zone.

  4. Syr Grim - This does more than your average aristocrats commander. The addition of allowing you to mill your opponents for life and to get rid of cards in your graveyard through any number of ways also helps.

Kenrith is an interesting card. Casually he is just a good value group hug creature.... meanwhile in competitive land he gives access to all broken cards, infinite mana sink that acts as a win con from the command zone, and can give haste for any creature tapping combo which makes those 1000% better.

The king is a wild dude...

I agree. It's extremely rare to see 4 separate abilities. Much less 4 that have so much versatility.

Gadwick is strong but at the same time, I feel like there's way better monoblue commanders that draw you cards than him. Also, he doesn't really bring any new interesting deck ideas to the table.

And Alela and Syr Gwyn are amazing, but I decided not to include any of the four brawl commanders because otherwise all four spots would've been taken over by them.

Torbrane is a super interesting card. Korvold is pretty cool. Rankle, lord of pranks is super awesome as a groug slug commander and my top choice for now.

Honestly Rankle almost ended up in the 4 but I feel like if anything you're gonna be hated of the table for having him.

Also just the fact he has to hit to get him going off is a little annoying.

Emry is also super good and I could see being very oppressive and fast in the right deck

Honestly the main reason I didn't include Emry is the fact that artifact decks have so many different commanders and she just isn't going to be as powerful as others in U or Ux options out there. However, she's still a fine commander or as part of the 99.

Also Yorvo tokens sounds interesting but I feel like that kinda takes away the point from Yorvo TypicalTimmy. I honestly was thinking just of building him as a monogreen blink deck or as +1/+1 counters matter deck.

That's a good point tbh

How is kenrith a group hug commander? He seems super fun to build around but I just don't see the group hug appeal unless your using him to draw your opponents cards?

But personally I'm most excited for Rankle, Master of Pranks theres been so many good mono black legends lately and many of them are probably stronger and/or more competitive but with a cmc of only 4 he can come out early and help control the tempo of the game

Kenrith's whole "target player" thing gives gifts to different target players who may need it or can be used as a response to someone else. The idea is that you build him as a straight up group hug deck, then use each ability to suit players when they need it.

Kenrith is extremely versatile, and I like him as a five-color commander. I was contemplating doing a mono-black deck, possibly with K'rrick from the c19 precons, but looking at Ayara she seems like she'd be far more suitable with my current card base. I love cards that drain opponents' life to increase my own, and I also like aristocrats, so having the option to do both kinds of effects on a commander is pretty appealing. Lots of good combos can come from her, and I don't think she should be underestimated.
