Can someone explain why Coalition Relic is so good?

Im repetitively new to EDH and in all my decks people have told me to put Coalition Relic in as a mana rock. Now, unless Im running lots of abilities to untap and tap my artifacts somewhere in my deck, I dont see how Coalition Relic is better than say, Spectral Searchlight . They both come out for 3 and both give one mana of any color a turn. Am I just missing something?
Coalition Relic + Unwinding Clock + 4 player game = good times for 3 mana.

Coalition Relic is good because doing powerful things 2 turns early is good. Obviously it is most useful in multicolor decks, whereas monocolor decks will be happier with something like Sol Ring . Personally I tend to use Darksteel Ingot over Coalition Relic , but I would run relic in a more color-intensive deck or one with a lot of 5-drops.

Because if you don't need the Coalition Relic on your turn, at the end of their turn you tap it for a counter, then on your turn you get two mana instead of one. The Spectral Searchlight is only ever making one per turn.
If you add in any untapping effects across turns in a multiplayer game, or counter increasing/doubling etc, it gets even better.
But the ability to tap for 0/2 instead of 1/1 makes it much better than the searchlight.
