Tyrannize or Bedevil?

Commander Deck Help forum

I have a copy of Tyrannize i every deck of mine that contains the colors black and red, but I am wondering if I should replace it with Bedevil , since that card has a lower converted mana cost; the former card can potentially produce a more powerful effect, but it must be played strategically, or else it will not hurt the player's opponent as much as the player wishes to hurt them.

What does everyone else say about this? Should I replace Tyrannize with Bedevil ?

I think Bedevil is a better card. Instant speed is good, too.

bushido_man96, I cannot believe that I forgot that bedevil was an instant, but your reminder has finalized my decision; thank you very much for it.

I've seen a lot of these kind of posts from you about a whole bunch of cards. And a lot of these cards are quite niche, why do you keep in including them in every deck that you can?

Other than the fact that this would make all your decks same-y, most of the cards are very deck dependent and seem bad outside of a very specific strategies (or just bad in general).

enpc, I am not certain if I can provide a satisfactory answer to that question, but I presume that it was because, when I was new to this game, I was not as skilled at building decks as I am, now, so many of my decks were simply me putting in the cards that I felt best suited the color combinations of those decks. However, I would be glad to entertain any suggestions that other users here may have, if they may be able to improve my decks.

Yeah this comes of as kind of a strange question just because Tyrannize is honestly just a really poor card. Especially in Commander. 7 life for 5 mana is just.... not good, and the only time someone is going to discard their hand is if what's in it is worth less than 7 life. Giving your opponents choices is almost always a bad thing, even if both choices seem powerful, because they'll always pick the weaker option. In this case though, the 7 life is just really insignificant.

This, combined with the fact that Bedevil is, on the other hand, a really good card, makes it seem like a pretty bizarre question. It's one of the best removal spells in B/R.

So yes, as an in general, I'd never run Tyrannize in EDH, and Bedevil is a good card. I wouldn't go so far as to say that you should just straight swap in every instance, but as an in general its a much better card. There are so many factors to consider with deck construction though like your mana curve, that just swapping this out directly would impact.
