Sorta Newbie Commander Question: Colour Identity.

Commander Deck Help forum

Okay, so I'm recently built a Samut, Voice of Dissent warrior tribal commander deck and I'm unsure if I can include Alesha, Who Smiles at Death in the 99 because of her W/B W/B Ability? Does the fact she has black in her ability mean I cannot use her in a Samut deck?

Samut's Color identity is Red, Green, White because she has those mana symbols on her card.

Alesha has a black mana symbol on her so her identity is White, Black, Red.

Color identity is determined by any color symbol printed on the card outside of reminder text. Hybrid symbols are both colors.

Bhaal666 is completely correct, however, I feel that we should also discuss the newer eldrazi, specifically those with the Devoid ability. While all of the eldrazi with Devoid are, for all intents and purposes, considered colorless during play, they are evaluated just like any other card in a commander deck (i.e. Dominator Drone is a colorless creature with a color identity of B, and is only valid under commanders with B in their identity).

Any color marker that is in the description explaining how something work such as extorts white/black symbol does not have a color identity. It has to actually be apart of the card to be considered part of the identity. Also, with that being said cards such as Elbrus, the Binding Blade  Flip check both sides of the card for color identity and since that 13/13 demon on the back is black the entire card has a black color identity. I hope this helps clarify some more fuzzy rules of EDH.

What flluid is talking about is what's referred to as "reminder text." It's what appears in parentheses like the example of the Extort mechanic with Crypt Ghast. Even though it has a symbol, it is within parentheses and therefore doesn't affect identity. Crypt Ghast's identity is strictly mono

So just to make sure I've got this right. No, I cannot run Alesha because she has black in her ability, and thus making her Mardu instead of Red in terms of placement in the 99?

@GemKnightDante correct she is a Mardu color identity card which you can not play in a Naya deck :)
