FNM 12-30-16 Results of the end of the year 3-0 —Jan. 3, 2017

With the close of the year we had a final chance to show the decks action for 2016. The results are good. The deck swept the event winning 3-0. The inclusion of the smugglers copters proved very strong and lead to the quick wins when drawn and when not drawn still didn't feel like I was lacking as if I was dedicating to much attention to them. The deck for the night only had 2 in deck (because I forgot to add my third copy I pulled before the events start) and will be including three for the deck now. I have determined I will not be adding a fourth because it doesn't feel needed and I expect a lot of anti artifact cards to be ready for the next set of cards coming out. I am thinking that I will be moving a copy of the equipment to the side or completely remove because it has issues with being used on 3 targets (copter, giddeon, spires), but more testing will determine if it stays or not. Here are the decks I played vs with the results:

Round 1: Jeskai Spirits (r/w/u) 2/1

This is an aggressive deck with a focus around spirits with support from reflector mage and red burn cards.

The first round featured a lot of back and forth because of the 3 burn spells he used and running into 2 quellers leading to a loss (0/12).

Side deck wins it for me in game 2 as I drew a tears that freed up a garrison from a queller and fragmentize to free it again from a stasis snare (18/0). The garrison paired with a lieutenant spun out of control from that point to end game.

The final game of this match was decided with turn 1 villager; 2 copter; 3 Lone rider; to turn 4 odric and my opponent drawing no control (fifth turn I was going to play Spires to activate and get double strike but they scooped on 4)(+20/0).

Round 2: Four color artifacts (w/g/r/b) 2/0

Strange deck about using the synergy of artifacts with color support spells; overall not a fast deck but beware when it draws its faster hands.

Game 1 he drew one of his faster hands but I managed to get an early flip on lone rider allowing me to stave of his offense and put him on the defense while gaining a lot of life. The game lasted for a bit because he got off a black gearhulk killing off my rider and stabilizing himself for a moment of staring contest, but he lost when I drew odric and just went around his army by going to the air (32/0).

Game 2 was won in 5 turns as turn 1 spires; turn 2 land and copter; turn 3 land and lone rider, swing with copter to loot and get another land; turn 4 land and odric, swing to get 4 life and transform on rider; turn 5 land, transform spires and swing for 20 in air with trample (44/0).

Round 3: U/B Zombie Key (2/0)

Game 1 speed was on my side as I drew 2 villagers, 1 inspector, always watching and 3 lands. Follwing two draws are another land and Odric leading to turn 4 win as my opponent couldn't get her combo going with her key (20/0).

Game 2 went similarly but took 5 turns to win as I went lieutenant turn 2 to garrison turn 3 to another garrison turn 4 and ending with always watching turn 5 (20/0). While they did get an prized alamgam haunting dead combo off on turn 4, it was just too late.

This deck I think is in its best running condition in the main board. The side deck could always use refinement for whatever the meta is looking like at the time and will possibly see some change with the new set coming out.

Feel free to leave a comment or question and I will get back to you when I can.

God I hate that it's come to the point where the only thing left to do is run Looter Scooter in this deck razelfark.

In similar news, the budget brew went 5-2 at my local FNM last Friday. Only lost to the guy who would eventually win the night (similar style of deck - Avacyn Humans w/ Looter Scooter & Chandra).

Yeah it makes me sad that the Copter is best answer to add to the deck at this point because I was trying to avoid using it since I see it in so many decks. The loot function, its early aggression, and keyword makes it a solid card for the deck that can't just be ignored. With the goal to add this card to the deck, I am going to be adjusting some cards again and likely bring back Thraben Inspector to the main so I have early creatures more consistently. Sadly this means I will likely cut the Angel of Invention because it will likely be too slow of a card to go to with the new build.

Kataclysm it is great to hear the version of your deck is working out for you. If you find you are having trouble with Avacyn, just remember to pay attention to your opponents land count and be wary about attacking in when they have 5 lands open. Also remember that you can still kill her when she enters the battle field with a spell before she passes her trigger (Skywhaler's Shot in your decks case). While the trigger will still resolve and make other creatures indestructible even if she dies, this is useful because you stopped her from being a blocker potentially saving one of your creatures but also allowing you to sneak creatures past their defense if you manage to swing wide enough.

Ahh after a disappointing week this week at FNM I have realised that I have almost every card needed to make the same deck. However in my luck I have managed to pull Archangel Avacyn  Flip to use as my 1-of Indestructible on a stick. Trading 1 Needle Spires for 1 more Plains; 3 Gideon for 2 Galvanic Bombardment and 1 Stasis Snare, and; 1 Thraben Inspector for aforementioned Avacyn.

Picked up 2 Looter Scooters in the 1 Kaladesh Bundle last week too! Amazing luck lately...

Selfless Spirit is great for flying and protecting from board wipes and I think it would help a lot.

Kataclysm I hope the deck works out for you. The avacyn should provide you with some good value.

N1996 I agree that the spirit is a great option, but like loot copter it isn't particularly cheap. I think if I were to run it that I would put it mainly in the sideboard to bring out vs control decks or decks with sweepers. If I were to dedicate to mainboard I would maybe take out messengers to make room for them; although the haste and general early aggro they have has won me a few games. I will have to give it some more thought and see about how to fit them in.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions. No update for FNM this week since I attended a holiday draft with friends. Will have update for progress with current decklist next Friday. Well after I tweak a little more after holiday. Hope you all can enjoy which ever holiday you choose to celebrate, and if you don't celebrate any then enjoy the week none the less.
