Mardu Control/Midrange performance —Dec. 12, 2017

Was bummed out after work. Seemed like I made a bad decision to swap out Inspiring Vantage for Bloodcleave Cliffs (not a cheap decision either) because the deck flowed poorlyin my 2 games of the night.

1st Game Vs 4 Color Kiki-Chord (lost) As janky as the deck seemed, Spell Queller and Voice of Resurgence are not easy to deal with as I never seemed able to draw a Path to Exile to deal with either of them. The deck revolved around a Kiki+Restoration Infinite Combo along with Eternal Witness getting him mileage out of Chord of Calling. Did not perform better after sideboarding as again, slow start being land-starved let the opponent run away with the game. Saltiness abound.

2nd Game Vs Eldrazitron (lost) Thinking that this would go favorably for me after previous match-ups with Bantdrazi proved to be my undoing. I made poor decisions on my keep and came to the realisation that I could not a keep a 2 land hand and needed to look out for that in future games. It was either 3 lands or mull. Anyway, I couldn't stop an extremely well-curved out play of 2 Eldrazi Temple and Cavern of Souls. His Reality Smashers nailed me unchallenged.

Bad side of variance I guess. Will consider swapping out Goblin Dark-Dwellers for something a little more aggressive and consistent like Stormbreath Dragon or mainboarding Kalitas.

I would drop young pyromancer. You're not looking to win quickly with this deck, you have more powerful cards, so you're going to win the long game. Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet is great because of the amazing removal in this deck. Also he's probably the best way to stabilize against an aggro opponent. Goblin Dark-Dwellers is another great threat that offers you a 2 for 1, or a 3 for 1 if you manage to hit kolaghan's command.

Monastery Mentor would be a pretty neat addition to this deck, going wide with prowess is very powerful. Another one is Boros Charm extra dmg, give something double strike or protecting against a wrath or a supreme verdict.Hope this helps!

@hannibal6 Thanks for the Goblin Dark-Dwellers recommendation. Would you run it as a 3 of or just 2? Dropping the Young Pyromancer would mean I could main board all my Lingering Souls to get some board presence.

@Cafelattis, I've flirted with the idea of running Monastery Mentor but I think I'd need to play to protect him more and it feels bad losing him to something like an Abrupt Decay . He's a build around but probably in a deck that works to protect. I dropped Boros Charm in favor of Lightning Helix. I lose out on flexibility but the lifegain in this deck is much needed.

I would say probably 2 goblin dark dwellers, you don't want to have 2 at the start of the game, and playing one is usually enough value to finish off most opponents. Lingering souls is pretty great in the format right now I think. UWr control has a tough time dealing with 4 bodies, and eldrazi aggro and death's shadow struggle against chump blockers.

Trippy, so I basically played this deck the other week at FNM. And Bedlam Reveler was just bananas in it.

Glad to hear it TreyV. I think the deck can perform well in most match-ups. Even if an opponent drops something as degenerate as a Blood Moon, some of the decks most dangerous top-end spells are in Red. Gonna give the Goblin Dark-Dwellers a try in this iteration. Flashing back a Kolaghan's Command or Collective Brutality seems too good not to try it.
