Yeah, the AL-AN math is total investment. As currently written, AL-AN has to be cast to get an Ion Cube, not just enter the battlefield. Assuming it's the commander:

First cast: cost {1}{U}{R}, total mana spent {1}{U}{R}. +1 Ion Cube, 1 Ion Cube total. P/T 1/1.

Second cast: cost {3}{U}{R}, total mana spent {4}{U}{U}{R}{R}. +1 Ion Cube, 2 Ion Cubes total. P/T 2/2.

Third cast: cost {5}{U}{R}, total mana spent {8}{U}{U}{U}{R}{R}{R}. +1 Ion Cube, 3 Ion Cube total. P/T 3/3.

It looks like I added an extra {1} to the second cast by mistake. Point still stands, though, that AL-AN will cost 7 mana to be a hasty 3/3, and it has cost 14 mana across three turns to reach that point, assuming it's acting entirely by itself. The Ion Cubes do cut the commander tax in half, but even factoring for that, the third cast is the equivalent of a 5-mana hasty 3/3, less efficient than Hulking Bugbear. So it needs the additional Ion Cube support to be effective, which it sounds like it's getting.

Ride the Herd would be a high pick common. Currently, all red 3/3s at MV 3 have a cost of {2}{R} and a drawback (typically a restriction on blocking). Hordeling Outburst appears to typically be an uncommon, as is Hulking Bugbear. Getting to choose between these two (minus the Bugbear's haste) offers a lot of flexibility. Could this card be pushed up to uncommon exactly as-is, and another common take its spot?
