When I take control of a creature, what happens to the Auras and Equipments?

Asked by MrFlungus 9 years ago

For example if I use Control Magic, the cardrule only says:

"You take control of a creature, but Auras enchanting and Equipment attached to the creature do not change controller."

So do those Auras and Equipments stay on the creature or do they get unattached?

The only reason they would become unattached is if changing control of the creature somehow made it an illegal object for them to be attached to. For example: Inferno Fist's Enchant ability says "Enchant creature you control". If the creature changes controllers then the Fist will be unattached. It's hard to construct an example where an Equipment would fall off, but I'm sure it's possible. Note that the Equipment's controller is allowed to use the Equip ability to move it somewhere else.

Okay I made out a little scenario:

My opponents controls a creature enchanted with Aboshan's Desire and equipped with Adventuring Gear. Now I cast Control Magic (while my opponent doesn't have more than seven cards in his graveyard!) targeting this creature. I gain control of it. When I have seven or more cards in my graveyard, nothing happens, but if my opponent has threshold, the creature gains shroud. Also, I am unable to use the equip ability of Adventuring Gear, and its Landfall triggers only if my opponent plays a land, not when I play one. He or she can equip Adventuring Gear onto another of his creature during his mainphase. He or she could also equip another equipment he or she controls onto the creature enchanted with Control Magic, because he or she is the owner of that card.

Is that scenario true?

All except for the very last statement. As given in the reminder text on Adventuring Gear and other Equipment, an Equip ability has to target a creature you control, not own. Your opponent can't put more equipment on the creature you took control of.

Everything is correct except for the last bit.

They can only equip onto creatures they CONTROL. Ownership has nothing to do with that case. They can attach the Adventuring Gear to something else because they control the equipment. But they can't attach other equipment to the creature you control because 'equip' specifies that it must target a creature controlled by the controller of the equipment.
