When can my opponent respond to a Phantasmal Image Aether Vialed in?

Asked by rogelio 6 years ago

Just wanted a quick clarification on when my opponent next gets priority in this particular interaction.

So just to make sure, I announce the activation of Aether Vial. Pass priority to my opponent, opponent passes priority back to me, activation resolves and I put down Phantasmal Image.

Now, is Phantasmal Image's copy ability an ETB, meaning a trigger is placed on the stack that my opponent can respond to? If that isn't the case, if Phantasmal Image copies a creature with an ETB, does the next possible chance my opponent gets to respond on the new ETB Phant Image copied? Could use some clarification, thank you!

If your opponent does not respond to the Vial trigger, their next chance to respond, assuming you copied a creature with an ETB, is after that ETB ability is put on stack.

If there is no ETB trigger involved, the earliest opportunity for your opponent to taget the Image with something is after the vial trigger fully resolves and you pass priority.

To be clear: the copy ability on Phantasmal Image and similar cards is a replacement effect that modifies how it enters the battlefield. It doesn't go to the stack and there's no opportunity for anyone to make a response as you're applying it.
