What would happen Renegade Doppelganger a copies a Tree of Perdition?

Let's say you cast a Tree of Perdition and had a Renegade Doppelganger in play.

Then when you use the Doppelganger to exchange it's life total with an opponent it'll be a 0/20.

But, will the Doppelganger still be a 0/20 after the end of your turn, when it stops being a Tree of Perdition?

Yes it will. In layer 7b, effects that set P/T are applied. So that will happen when Doppelganger copies the Tree. When you activate its ability, you will use 7b again and set its toughness to 20, instead of it being 13. This overrides the first application of layer 7b, and is not tied to the "until end of turn" duration for the copy ability.

Interesting, thanks for the clarification.

I guess then, he will be 0/20 for the rest of the game, even if he uses his ability to copy another creature on the next turn. Right?

If he becomes a copy of something else, that's a new effect in 7b, so it'll use the copied toughness. Don't worry though, once it stops being a copy it'll once again be a 0/20 Renegade Doppelganger because the older effect didn't wear off, it was just being temporarily overridden.

@Neotrup: Even though copy effects can change a card's text, types, colors, abilities, and P/T, they're only applied in Layer 1. You don't go through each layer and apply all the pieces of the copy effect separately. In this situation, Renegade Doppelganger's toughness will remain 20 if it becomes a copy of another creature. The copy effect is applied in Layer 1, then the P/T setting effect from the earlier Tree of Perdition activation is applied in Layer 7b.
