Wondering whether I can use Alesha, Who Smiles at Death to reanimate a Serra Avatar assuming that my life is 40?

Serra Avatar's ability "Serra Avatar's power and toughness are each equal to your life total" is a characteristic defining ability because it defines a characteristic (power and toughness) and is not conditional. An easy way to identify these for power/toughness is the use of * in the lower right hand corner, though with CDAs for color/subtype this trick does not work. The important thing is that because this is a CDA, it applies at all times in all zones, even outside the game (and applies before other effects that would change power/toughness, regardless of timestamps). So, no, you cannot return Serra Avatar to the battlefield with Alesha, Who Smiles at Death unless your life total is 2 or less. One caveat is that "your life total" will refer to the card's owner, rather than controller, in zones other than the battlefield or stack, as an object has no conroller in other zones.
