Tendrils of Agony and Safe Passage

Asked by LiquidKid 8 years ago

I cast a lethal Tendrils of Agony on my friend. He responds with Safe Passage. I told him damage and loss of life are two different things. Who is correct?

You are correct, Damage causes loss of life, but the inverse is not true.

Safe Passage protects the player from sources that specifically cause damage. Effects that cause loss of life will not be prevented by this card.

In this case the Passage would resolve, but it would do nothing regarding your Tendrils.

LiquidKid: damage causes life loss, but life loss does not cause damage. for example, if someone has a Personal Sanctuary and an opponent has Blood Seeker out, the first player still loses life when playing creatures.
