State-based action fun with Restoration Angel

Asked by PrimeEpoch 6 years ago

So the question is if Restoration Angel targets a creature token like one made by Blade Splicer, would the token cease to exist? I mean it seems illogical, but the rules seem to point to the token surviving. Hear me out.

704.4. Unlike triggered abilities, state-based actions pay no attention to what happens during the resolution of a spell or ability

704.5. The state-based actions are as follows:

704.5d If a token is in a zone other than the battlefield, it ceases to exist.

So, if state-based actions are only checked after the resolution of the ability, the token would survive right? If it does, it'll become a new object so it seems odd.

The token can not re-enter and ceases to exist the next time SBAs are checked.

110.5g A token that has left the battlefield cant move to another zone or come back onto the battlefield. If such a token would change zones, it remains in its current zone instead. It ceases to exist the next time state-based actions are checked; see rule 704.

Thanks, thought it seemed too good to be true...

Also important, Restoration Angel says to return the card. As the token is not a card, Restoration Angel doesn't even try to return it (not that the attempt would amount to much).
