Situation with AEtherling + Portcullis

Asked by jtsrtr4326 9 years ago

Here's what went down:

Player A controlled Portcullis in a 5 player EDH game. More than 2 creatures in play across the board.

Player B had recently played AEtherling , which was set aside under Portcullis .

Player A goes to combat phase and declares attackers, In response, Player B uses Naturalize on Portcullis to get his Aetherling as an available blocker.

Upon blocking with Aetherling, Player B activates the exile-return ability of Aetherling with damage on the stack.

Player A says Aetherling is now permanently exiled, but the rest of us disagree.

Ruling?

AEtherling 's ability would function normally, and it would be exiled and return under its owner's (Player B's) control at the beginning of the next end step.

There is no reason for it to be permanently exiled.

As a quick note, damage no longer goes on the stack. Combat damage is dealt simultaneously.

Thank you williamgp99. This is what i was thinking would happen, especially since Player A allowed Naturalize to resolve with no responses.

Did Player A happen to explain why he thought AEtherling was gone for good? I'm curious.

"Damage on the stack" was taken out of the game with the M10 Rules Update. There is no longer any time in-between assigning and dealing damage to make responses.

Rhadamanthus Player A never did provide a sufficient reason as to why he thought permanent exile was the end result.
