Savage ventmaw with haste free?

Asked by Fro780 9 years ago

So let's say I have a Hammer of Purphoros in play. Can I slap down a Savage Ventmaw by using his combat ability to pay for him??

You can play another one in your second main phase if that's what you are asking. The dragon will never be able to pay for itself because it already needs to be in play to get its add mana trigger whenever it attacks.

No I was talking about first one.. that's what I thought I just had someone comment on my deck Siracha Ramp Dragons saying that he would be free. I disagreed and told him I would ask. Thanks Luciela. Check our the deck and see what u think!

I think your commenter meant that he's essentially pays for himself if you give him haste as he gives you back all the mana you spent to cast him, but no, as Luciela said, a spell's effect or ability can never pay for it's own mana cost.

You should always remember to select an answer so this will be removed from the active questions queue.

Fro780 i see what the person means. you still need the mana to cast Savage Ventmaw as you normally would, you cant just put it into play without paying its cost, all he was saying was that you essentially get that mana back when you attack. Savage Ventmaw's ability is a triggered ability that can only be triggered when it attacks.
