Sacrificing before attacking

Asked by Kujisaki 4 years ago

If i declare an attack with my Bloodsoaked Champion , but sacrificing It with my Witch's Oven before the attack happens, can i put It back on the field in my Main Phase 2 by paying his Raid cost?

Yes, this would work.

Bloodsoaked Champion 's Raid ability only checks if you attacked with a creature. In MtG terms, "to attack" with a creature means to declare it as an attacker during the Declare Attackers step, which you've done, so you meet the condition for Raid.

As a note, as soon as you declare it as an attacker, the attack "happens." But you can sacrifice it before blockers are declared, or after blockers are declared but before damage is dealt, or even after damage is actually dealt (if it isn't killed by damage first).

You seem to be conflating a few different things. There are five steps in the combat phase.

Beginning of combat: Things that trigger at the beginning of combat trigger here. Players also receive priority, so instants can be cast and abilities activated.

Declare attackers: This step begins by the active player declaring what creatures they would like to attack with. Declaring an attacker at this point will fulfill the requirement for Raid for the turn. Regardless of if that creature gets through, gets blocked, or is somehow removed from combat. After attackers are declared there is a round of priority.

Declare blockers: This step begins with any defending player(s) being able to declare creatures to block creatures that are attacking them. After defenders are declared there is a round of priority.

Combat damage step: Attacking and defending creatures deal their damage. If there are creatures with double strike or first strike only those with one or both will deal damage a second combat damage step is created where creatures with double strike and creatures who have not yet dealt damage will deal damage. There is a round of priority after damage being dealt on the combat damage step(s).

End of combat: Last opportunity to cast spells or activate abilities during combat.

If you are declaring Bloodsoaked Champion as an attacker then we are on the combat damage step. The next time you would have priority to activate Witch's Oven will be after declaring attackers. At this point raid will have been fulfilled. You will be able to return Bloodsoaked Champion later in combat (the returned card will not be in combat), on your second main, or on the ending phase of your turn.

@Gidgetimer

I think you mean "if you are declaring Bloodsoaked Champion as an attacker, then we are on the declare attackers step" and not the combat damage step.
