Possibility Storm does what with this?

So this guy CASTS Cancel (with no target) and Possibility Storm is out. He gets a Cyclonic Rift with it and tries to pay the Overload cost. I tell him he can't because it's not from his hand but he disagrees.

This doesn't work, for multiple reasons:

  1. If a spell (or ability) has targets, you have to choose a full set of legal targets in order to play it at all. Your opponent isn't allowed to cast Cancel without a target.
  2. Overload is an alternative cost, as is "without paying its mana cost". Only one alternative cost can be applied to a spell, meaning Overload can't be applied to a spell being cast by Possibility Storm's ability
