Porphyry Nodes and Hexproof

Asked by Stryfe_ 5 years ago

I have a 3/3 Dungrove Elder and a Steel Leaf Champion on the battlefield, and my opponent has a Porphyry Nodes. On their upkeep, when Porphyry Nodes fails to kill Dungrove Elder, does it kill Steel Leaf Champion instead, or simply do nothing? Additionally, if Dungrove Elder is the only creature on the battlefield, and Porphyry Nodes triggers and does nothing, does Porphyry Nodes get sacrified?

Nothing is preventing Porphyry Nodes from killing Dungrove Elder. Nowhere in its text does it use the word "target," meaning hexproof won't protect a creature from its effects. Indestructibility will protect a creature from the Nodes, in which case if it is indeed the creature with the least power, the Nodes will try to destroy it (accomplishing nothing) and not go anywhere, since just because it can't kill any of the creatures in play, that doesn't mean there are no creatures in play.
