Morph into cascade

Asked by legendofa 5 years ago

I've looked around, and I found that you can't cast a creature facedown off a Cascade effect. What about the other way around? If I cast a morph spell facedown with Yidris, Maelstrom Wielder effect active, does it Cascade for <0 mana (no listed mana cost), Cascade for <3 mana (the mana cast of morph casting), no Cascade at all, or something else?

Per rule 702.84a, -- "Cascade" means "When you cast this spell, exile cards from the top of your library until you exile a nonland card whose converted mana cost is less than this spell's converted mana cost.

Morphs have a CMC of 0, so you will exile your entire library, cast nothing (nothing costs less than 0), and then put the exiled cards back on the bottom of your library in a random order. It all amounts to basically revealing your entire library and then shuffling it.

Cool. Now all I need to finish this deck idea is a card that wants me to shuffle as much as possible. Thanks Kogarashi!

Though it is accomplished by shuffling the deck, putting your entire library on the bottom of your library in a random order does not trigger effects that look for a player to "shuffle their library". So be careful not to use them as the "card that wants you to shuffle as much as possible".

Gidgetimer. You're right. The card I need would want the library to be randomized as much as possible. Either way, that card doesn't exist right now, as far as I know.

So I just came across this question, because I'm building an Imoti deck and the answers provided are wrong.

A morphed creature has ALL of the characteristics of the card that is being morphed. CMC is a characteristic of a card, so if you pay 3 and morph a brine elemental face down, the cascade trigger starts at the face up mana cost, which would be 6. Im going to absolutely abuse this.

No. It has no mana cost.

702.36a Morph is a static ability that functions in any zone from which you could play the card it’s on, and the morph effect works any time the card is face down. “Morph [cost]” means “You may cast this card as a 2/2 face-down creature with no text, no name, no subtypes, and no mana cost by paying {3} rather than paying its mana cost.” (See rule 707, “Face-Down Spells and Permanents.”)
