Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist - blocking replacement effect?

Asked by ExpectDragons 6 years ago

The ability of Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist when attacking states that each opponent can't block with more than one creature. However if i'm also attacking with Nacatl War-Pride it must be blocked by exactly one creature, which would appear to be a replacement effect for mirri?

There doesn't seem to be a contradiction here. Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist says that the opponent can't block with more than one creature and Nacatl War-Pride says it has to be blocked by one creature if able, it is able (assuming nothing else os going on), so the War-Pride is blocked by one creature and nothing else is blocked.

If there are multiple requirements and restrictions to take into account when declaring attackers/blockers, you have to make a declaration that maximizes the number of requirements being fulfilled without violating any restrictions. The first ability on Nacatl War-Pride and the token copies it creates is a requirement and the first ability on Mirri, Weatherlight Duelist is a restriction. In your example the only legal declaration of blockers your opponent can make is to block the War Pride (or one of the token copies) with one creature.
