Melira and -1/-1 Counters Question

Asked by IrishMidgetMan 6 years ago

If I have Melira, Sylvok Outcast on the field and I play a creature that etb's with neg counters, such as Carnifex Demon, would he get his neg counters since he enters with them and they arn't given to him after he hits the field with an effect like wither or infect or a spell?

Your Carnifex Demon would not enter the battlefield with -1/-1 counters on it, as Melira's ability prevents -1/-1 counters being placed on creatures you control, regardless of source.

The question isn't really one of origin, but of application - the reason is the following rule, clearly indicating that Melira applies:

121.6. If a spell or ability refers to a counter being "placed" on a permanent, it means putting a counter on that permanent while its on the battlefield, or that permanent entering the battlefield with a counter on it as the result of an effect (...)

In order to wreak havok with Carnifex Demon here, he'd have to already be on the battlefield and stacked with some counters before Melira is under your control, as she doesn't remove counters from permanents already under your control.
