M15's "Might Makes Right" and firebreathing/multiple combat interactions

Asked by SorcerersBone 9 years ago

I can't link the card as it hasn't come out yet, but here it is.

Might Makes Right (5)(R)Enchantment"At the beginning of combat on your turn, if you control each creature on the battlefield with the greatest power, gain control of target creature and opponent controls until end of turn. Untap that creature. It gains haste until end of turn."

If I artificially pump a creature to be the highest power (with something like "(R): this creature gets +1/+0.") does it have to be the highest power before I enter combat phase, or can I do that as I enter the beginning of combat to make use of "Might Makes Right"?

If I gain an additional combat phase via Aggravated Assault or other means, will "Might Makes Right" 's ability occur those additional times? (assuming i still have the highest powered creature)

The ability of Might Makes Right triggers at the beginning of the "beginning of combat" step. You have to control the creature with greatest power (or tied for greatest power) before you start your combat phase, otherwise the ability won't trigger.

Might Makes Right will trigger (if you meet the condition) at the beginning of every combat phase on your turn, even additional ones.

While Rhadamanthus is correct on when it triggers, the wording used is a little off on the how of the trigger. Specifically "if you control each creature on the battlefield with the greatest power." You must control the creature with the highest power, if there is a tie for the highest power you must control all of the creatures that are involved in the tie. So if you are using firebreathing to make your creatures big enough to meet the trigger event make sure you go 1 power higher than any creature your opponents control.

Right, that's what I meant to say about "tied for greatest power" but I botched it. Sorry about that.

Right, one more question. Can I enter the combat phase without the intention of attacking and have Might Makes Right trigger? (also assuming I have multiple combat phases and the highest powered creature)

Yes, you can steal things during your combat phase even if you have no intention of attacking. And actually you have to steal something if you control the creature with the greatest power or all of the creatures tied for the greatest power. The beginning of combat step happens before declare attackers and the trigger isn't a may. There are ways that the beginning of combat wouldn't happen but those are things like Stonehorn Dignitary that make people skip their entire combat phase.
