Is mana spent on additional costs considered spent on that spell?

Asked by Yesterday 1 year ago

I control a Vazi, Keen Negotiator. My opponent controls an Omniscience and casts Into the Roil without paying its mana cost, kicked by sacrificing two Treasures and paying that mana only on the kicked cost.

Does Vazi's ability trigger?

Yes, you are still paying the treasure mana into casting Into the Roil. For the purposes of mana spent to cast the spell, what was paid into the total cost is looked at. Whether it was an additional cost, alternative cost, or the mana cost when doing the calculation to determine total cost is not important.

Vazri says "Whenever an opponent casts a spell or activates an ability, if mana from a Treasure was spent to cast it or activate it". Kicker is an ability, but it is not an activated ability and and can not be activated and mana associated with kicker costs isn't being spent to activate an ability.

Kicker is an additional cost to cast a spell. The part of Vazri's ability that applies is the part about casting a spell. And as I said in my original reply, Vazri's trigger only cares about if mana was used to pay part of the total cost to cast the spell as determined in CR 601.2f
