Interaction between Gideon, Champion of Justice and Auras.

Asked by ScotchMTGFanboy 10 years ago

Let's say I control a Gideon, Champion of Justice on field, I add no loyalty counters, he becomes an "indestructible human soldier creature with power and thoughness each equal to the number of loyalty counters on him", If I then cast an Ordeal of Heliod can I target him with it? 1) Will he then gain an additional +1/+1 counter as he attacks?2) Will he lose all the aura and counters as he turns back into a planeswalker or does he keep them both?

3) Loyalty counters, and "regular" +1/+1 counters are different things, right?

Thanks!

You can certainly target an animated Gideon with an "Enchant Creature" aura such as Ordeal of Heliod since he is a creature at that point. However, at the end of the turn the aura will fall off as he is no longer a creature. A permanent must always fulfill the requirements for an aura to enchant it. He will still gain the +1/+1 counters when he attacks, and he will retain the counters until he leaves the battlefield. Unlike Auras, counters will always remain until they are removed or until the permanent leaves. That's why Raging Ravine has the ability it does. And for the final question, yes, loyalty and +1/+1 counters are different things.
