Infest - would creatures regenerate?

Asked by gianski 9 years ago

If my opponent has a bunch of 1/1 tokens on the battlefield and I used Infest, would the tokens be revived after my turn?

If a 1/1 creature gets -2/-2, then it has toughness 0 or less and is put into the graveyard as a state-based action. (the "regenerate" mechanic of cards like Drudge Skeletons cannot prevent this). Although the -2/-2 effect ends during the cleanup step, creatures in the graveyard stay there unless something specifically moves them elsewhere. They will not come back from the graveyard when the effect ends.

Furthermore, if a token ever leaves the battlefield (such as if a 1/1 Solider token gets hit by an Infest), it ceases to exist entirely shortly thereafter, so it is no longer even in your graveyard or, indeed, the entire game.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "revive," but I'll guess from the use of regenerate in your question title that you may be misunderstanding something.

Regeneration is a replacement effect. It replaces a destruction event (caused by an explicit "destroy" effect like Doom Blade or by lethal damage) with another event (tapping, removing from combat, and removing all damage marked on the object). If a permanent is regenerated, it never goes to the graveyard.

Now, regeneration does not interact with -X/-X effects or -1/-1 counters because those things do not cause destruction. A creature with 0 or less toughness is simply put into its owner's graveyard as a state-based action. Therefore, regeneration won't save 1/1 tokens from Infest.

Additionally, a token that leaves the battlefield goes to its new zone (in this case, the graveyard) and remains there until state-based actions are checked, at which point the token ceases to exist as a state-based action. It can't move to any other zone or back to the battlefield.
