I cast Howl of the Horde (Raid-enabled) then Reiterate; what is the end result?

Asked by LutherAD 7 years ago

My logic is that since Howl's check is purely "when you cast" and not the "resolvement" of the spell, I can still target it with cards like Reiterate.

Assuming this is true, what is the end result?

My understanding would be as follows:

1) Cast Howl of the Horde

2) Cast Reiterate, targeting Horde

3) Reiterate generates a copy of Horde, adding two new copies of the next applicable spell I cast.

4) Original Howl resolves, generating two copies of the "Reiter-Howl" which in turn each give me an additional two copies of the next spell I cast.

5) I cast Ponder, gaining six extra copies in the result for a total of Seven Ponders.

Am I right here, or am I missing something?

Link all cards in your question.
Howl of the Horde
Reiterate
Ponder

You get four copies, plus the original. Your explanation goes awry in steps 4 and 5.

Howl of the Horde creates a delayed triggered ability that triggers the next time you cast a spell.

When you cast Howl of the Horde, this DTA doesn't exist yet because Howl of the Horde hasn't resolved yet.

Therefore, Reiterate won't be copied, nor will whatever spell it copies (the original Howl of the Horde hasn't resolved yet).

So you cast Howl of the Horde. Then, you cast Reiterate. Reiterate resolves, creating a copy of Howl of the Horde. The copy resolves, creating a DTA. Then, the original Howl of the Horde resolves, creating an additional DTA.

Assuming raid is true at the time this all happens, you'll get four copies of the next spell you cast. Counting that spell itself, that's a total of five instances of that spell.
