How would Thromok the insatiable and hardened scales interact?

Asked by Sniper11217 6 years ago

More importantly how does the entire devour mechanic interact with cards like Hardened Scales ?

For example: if I have hardened scales in play and I play thromak and devour three creatures, would he enter with 10 counters (3+3+3+1) or with 12 :((3+1)+(3+1)+(3+1))?

I think it would be 10 because all the +1/+1 counters are put on at the same time so it can only trigger Hardened Scales once.

Small correction: Hardened Scales doesn't trigger, but rather acts as a replacement effect. The answer is still 10 counters, because it's modifying the event of Thromok the Insatiable entering the battlefield (with +1/+1 counters on it) which is a single event.

I knew how the replacement effect worked with counters being placed. The rule text for Thromok says (place X +1/+1 counters on this creature for each creature sacrificed this way)So I wanted to be sure how hardened scales reacted with that. The devour effect on Mycoloth however is a little different.

The devour of Mycoloth is different in that it is a pre defined number, but if Mycoloth devours 3 creatures with Hardened Scales out you end up with 7 counters (3*2+1) because it's the same interaction.
