How does the Ajani Steadfast Emblem act with Double Damage?

Asked by keyno 9 years ago

So, if I have the emblem from Ajani Steadfast 's minus 7 ability, and Dictate of the Twin Gods is also in play, how much damage is dealt by a card like Magma Jet ?

Is it doubled then reduced to one, or is it reduced to one, then doubled? I thought the player with priority would put theirs on the "stack" then the other effect enters, or if they are both controlled by the same player, you could choose how they go on, but apparently this isn't the case?

Can someone explain to me if my theory is wrong, and if so then why?

Thanks

Also, could someone clarify how this would work with multiple of the emblem or dictates? Just out of interest as this might end up happening at some point.

Both the emblem's ability and Dictate of the Twin Gods 's ability create replacement effects that would apply to damage dealt to the emblem's controller or a planeswalker he or she controls.

When multiple replacement effects would apply to the same event, they are applied one at a time in the order of the affected player's choosing. Assuming you control the emblem, you would choose whether to apply Dictate of the Twin Gods 's replacement effect or the emblem's replacement effect. You would then apply the other one because it could still apply to the event.

The end result is 2 damage if you apply the emblem's effect first (prevent all but 1, then double that) and 1 damage if you apply Dictate of the Twin Gods 's effect first (double the original damage, then prevent all but 1 of that).

If you have multiple of either, you still apply them one at a time and go from there.

Thanks, I think I get that. Just, when you say "Affected Player", would that be the player that is taking the damage decides, or the player that is dealing the damage? And is this the case regardless of who controls the Dictate of the Twin Gods ?

The player who is being dealt the damage/being affected.

616.1. If two or more replacement and/or prevention effects are attempting to modify the way an event affects an object or player, the affected object's controller (or its owner if it has no controller) or the affected player chooses one to apply, following the steps listed below. If two or more players have to make these choices at the same time, choices are made in APNAP order (see rule 101.4).

Uh, I'd actually appreciate Epoch getting accepted answer. His actually handled what the original question was. I merely tidied up the side question and posted his rule.
