How does manifest interact with Opalescence?

Asked by jesuslovedhumor 4 years ago

Opalescence makes enchantments into creatures. If it's out and an enchantment is manifested does it count as a creature and thus able to be flipped up?

No. Manifest allows you to flip up a manifested creature card by paying its casting cost. A manifested enchantment is not a creature card even with Opalescence in play.

Relevant Manifest rule, with the important part emphasized:

  • 701.33b Any time you have priority, you may turn a manifested permanent you control face up. This is a special action that doesn’t use the stack (see rule 116.2b). To do this, show all players that the card representing that permanent is a creature card and what that card’s mana cost is, pay that cost, then turn the permanent face up. The effect defining its characteristics while it was face down ends, and it regains its normal characteristics. (If the card representing that permanent isn’t a creature card or it doesn’t have a mana cost, it can’t be turned face up this way.)

Oh, as a relevant addendum, if your manifested enchantment is one of the Theros enchantment creatures, such as Purphoros, God of the Forge or Eidolon of Blossoms , that would be a creature card and valid to flip, even if your devotion is not high enough (because the devotion doesn't apply when the card is face-down), because the card has the creature type as well as enchantment type.
