How doConfusion in the Ranks + Endless Whispers interact in a multiplayer game?

Asked by theazzyg 8 years ago

So it's a 4 player free for all. i control both Confusion in the Ranks + Endless Whispers. If each player has two creatures on the field and they get sent to the graveyard. When endless whispers resolves and all creatures come on to the battlefield, in what order do the creatures get exchanged, e.g. does player one exchange first and then player two and so on? thanks

Short answer: This defies a short answer.

Long answer:

  1. Players A, B, C and D control 2 Grizzly Bears each. It's A's turn, and A controls both Endless Whispers and Confusion in the Ranks.
  2. Player A casts Wrath of God. Each Grizzly Bears dies.
  3. At this time, each Grizzly Bears's trigger on death from Endless Whispers occurs. Player A's triggers go on the stack first, so they choose the target player who receives each of their Bears at the next end step, then B, C, and D. For simplicity's sake, let's say A always targets B, B C, and so on.
  4. The abilities resolve in the reverse order, but at this point that doesn't matter.
  5. End step happens. The delayed triggers from Endless Ranks for each player happens. Player A's Bears' triggers go on the stack first, then B, then C, then D. D's triggers will resolve first.
  6. D's Bears number 1 enters under A's control. Confusion in the Ranks triggers.
  7. The Confusion in the Ranks trigger has no legal targets, so no exchange happens.
  8. D's Bears number 2 enters under A's control. Step 7 happens again because no one else has any creatures.
  9. C's Bears number 1 enters under D's control. Confusion in the Ranks triggers, and has to target either of the Bears A controls.
  10. Trigger resolves. Bears switch control.
  11. Those last two bits happen a bunch more times.
  12. A gets punched in the face for wiping the board with both of those cards in play without being able to explain the interaction themselves.

Step 12 is arguably the most important
