Etrata and bounce

Asked by Kaion-dono 5 years ago

No matter how long I play Magic I can never seem to fully understand the stack. So I must ask with the new Etrata, the Silencer’s ability. It’s a triggered ability. If I were to use a bounce ability like Unsummon. Then with her ability on the stack I bounce her, is a creature exiled with a hit counter still and she doesn’t shuffle into my library?

If that’s true, do I still shuffle my library?

If you can't do part of an effect, then you simply do as much of it as you can. In this case you would not be able to shuffle Etrata, the Silencer into your library since the permanent that the ability triggered from is no longer on the battlefield. You will still exile the targeted creature, the player would lose the game if they own three or more exiled cards with hit counters on them, and the rest of your library would be shuffled. The only exception is if an effect had targets and all of its targets become illegal, it will fizzle and do nothing.

(I had to look up the bit about the shuffling. It is CR701.19c

701.19c If an effect would cause a player to shuffle one or more specific objects into a library, that library is shuffled even if none of those objects are in the zone they’re expected to be in or an effect causes all of those objects to be moved to another zone or remain in their current zone)

Yes. Also yes.

10/5/2018 If Etrata leaves the battlefield while its triggered ability is on the stack, it remains in its new zone and Etrata’s owner shuffles their library.
