EDH mana generation

Asked by DancesWithGoblins 10 years ago

Using a R/W Commander, can I have Jungle Shrine in the deck?

My thought was that if you try and generate any colour mana not in your Commander's colours, you generate one colourless instead, is that not correct?

You cannot because the color identity (mana symbols that appear anywhere on cards) your deck can support is set by the colors of your general. If your general is only R/W, you can't have anything in your deck that has any other mana symbols on it. Jungle Shrine 's color identity is RGW because it has those mana symbols on it.

The rule about generating colorless mana refers to abilities that do not use mana symbols (like Exotic Orchard ). If you are playing agains U/B deck for example, the Orchard will only add colorless mana to your pool, because it can't generate blue or black mana that your opponent's lands produce.

Thank you.

@Absinthman: The rule isn't restricted to abilities that don't use mana symbols. If you use Annex in a UB deck to steal an opponent's Jungle Shrine , then it will add colorless mana to your mana pool if you tap it for mana.

Thanks for pointing it out. I didn't think of this scenario when I was writing my reply.
