Easy one, extort before wipe?

Asked by thewyzman 10 years ago

Just a (probably simple) quickie:

  • with title drinker in play, I cast Drown in Sorrow (sorely outnumbered by aggro). Can I extort before it dies to the damage? I think yes?

Yes. Extort triggers and you pay it's cost when Drown in Sorrow goes on the stack. The extort will actually resolve first, not that it matters. Once an ability is on the stack, it will resolve, provided there are legal targets. Extort doesn't use targets, so it'd be fine in either case.

Extort triggers when you cast the spell, before it actually starts resolving. Drown in Sorrow will trigger any extort abilities you control before it gives creatures -2/-2.

You pay extort as you cast the spell so yes you can.

I'll also point out that giving something -x/-x to their p/t is not damage. That is relevant to anything that is dependent on damage being dealt.

Yes. Extort is activated in response to the casting of the spell, not the resolution of it.

The extort is a triggered ability. It goes on the stack on top of the spell that has been cast to trigger it. That means it will resolve before the actual.

When the trigger resolves, you have the option to pay the W/B. If you do, you get to leach away one life. If you don't, nothing happens. Either way, after that trigger has resolved, then the drown in sorrow will actually try to resolve and wipe the board.
