Does Witherscale Wurm get tokens from Amonkhet cards?

Asked by Mr_crazydude 6 years ago

It used to be that we didn't care who or what card got a -1/-1 counter on it. However that mechanic changed a slight bit with amonkhet.

I'm especially curious about interactions with Witherscale Wurm. If you have Witherscale worm blocked by a 1/1 and all of the following cards out: 1) Flourishing Defenses; 2) Nest of Scarabs 3) Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons

how many tokens would you get?

Witherscale Wurm would get one -1/-1 counter, which would trigger three token-creating abilities across those cards. You'd get a 1/1 green Elf Warrior, a 1/1 black Insect, and a 1/1 green Snake with deathtouch.

so the "you" clause in Nest of Scarabs and Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons is dependent on the owner of the creature to receive the -1/-1 counters? if it's my creature, I'm the player who puts a -1/-1 counter on it even though it's the opponents creature that has wither?

Sorry, missed that part. Then no, it wouldn't work for Nest of Scarabs or Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons. Your opponent would be the player placing the counters.

From Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons's Gatherer rulings:

If a creature with wither or infect deals damage to a creature, the controller of the creature with wither or infect puts that many -1/-1 counters on the second creature.

This does, however, mean that wither cards pair nicely in a deck with either of those cards.

Yes I'm building a Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons commander deck. But seeing as the mechanics of -1/-1 counters changed a bit it's now important to know who placed the counter. Ok, so in conclusion Witherscale Wurm won't be that much of an addition seeing as it won't give me the tokens. I'll accept this as the answer to my original question. thanks for your help.
