Does Thalia's Lieutenant's 1st ability trigger for a second entering the battlefield?

Asked by Lord_Grimm 7 years ago

If a Thalia's Lieutenant is already in play, and you cast a second one do both first abilities trigger for each? I mean 'Thalia's lieutenant' entered and the one on the board's first ability states triggers when Thalia's lieutenant enters (which it just did) so wouldn't both the one entering AND the existing one's 1st ability trigger? I understand the second ability wouldn't double trigger upon the second lieutenant entering because it states 'other'.

Thalia's Lieutenant.

No.

If a card mentions its name in its text, it means "this card right here", not "every card named Thalia's Lieutenant". What would actually occur:

  1. Play thalia's liutenant #1 (no other creatures on the board).
  2. Play thalia's liutenant #2.(no creatures besides #1 on board).
  3. Number 2's first ability triggers. At the same time, #1's second ability triggers.
  4. You can rearrange in which order these abilities will resolve, but in the end, #1 and #2 will end up with a +1/+1 counter each.

From the Comprehensive Rules:

"201.4. Text that refers to the object its on by name means just that particular object and not any other objects with that name, regardless of any name changes caused by game effects."

So, no. When a card references its own name, it specifically means only itself and not any other copies of the card.

Boza, in regards to #4, how does each get a +1/+1 counter? Wouldn't the existing Lieutenant get 2 and the new one get 0?

Yeah, I misread the first ability a bit, my bad. Confusing card. Lieutenant #2 will indeed get 2 counters, while the other gets none.
