Does Overload work with cards that have protection from X?

Asked by Exuluna 9 years ago

I used to be a fairly avid magic player before leaving the game to handle other things. As a result, I'm not sure how cards like Teleportal work when a card like Gaea's Revenge is under my control.

If I were to pay the Overload cost of Teleportal , would the Gaea's Revenge receive the effect as it is not targeting any specific creature, but instead, EACH creature I control? Technically I'm asking if Overload goes through protection (or protection like abilities) like Wrath of God goes through protection from White.

I understand that Gaea's Revenge doesn't exactly have any specific protection, but it still protects itself to a varying degree. It just seems that a card like Teleportal would still work in this sense.

First, overloaded spells don't target each creature you control. They don't target anything.

An overloaded spell applies a nontarget effect to the described set of objects. This allows overload to get past the targeting restrictions of protection. However, damage that would be dealt by an overloaded spell (Mizzium Mortars , for example), will still be prevented.

To answer your scenario-specific question, an overloaded Teleportal can affect a Gaea's Revenge .
