Does extort damage go through if the spell get countered?

If I have Kingpin's Pet out and call extort whilst playing a spell and my opponent uses Counterspell does the extort damage go through?

You do not call extort. Extort is a triggered ability that triggers every time you cast a spell. It goes on the stack above the spell that triggered it and it gives a binary choice:

  • Pay and drain 1 life.
  • Do nothing.

Since extort is a triggered ability, it is completely independant of the original spell. Even if the spell is countered, the extort ability will resolve unhindered.

To clarify a certain point, countering a spell doesn't keep it from being cast. It just simply stops it from resolving. Abilities (namely triggered abilities like Extort) that depend on a spell being cast don't care if the spell resolves or not.

Note also that extort does not deal damage. It causes loss of life. Although loss of life is typically the result of damage, the two are not synonymous.
