Do you gain life if a creature leaves the battlefield?

Asked by jacb007 8 years ago

So say I have an attacking Child of Night and my opponent blocks with an AEtherling. In response, I cast Touch of Moonglove, targeting my Child of Night, and in response my opponent uses AEtherling's ability to exile it and return it to the battlefield. In this instance, I understand no damage is dealt to either creature, but would I still gain life from the lifelink? Also, what would happen if the AEtherling had lifelink in this scenario?

Lifelink says "damage dealt by this creature also causes you to gain that much life". If the creature doesn't deal damage, you don't gain life - and the same goes for the AEtherling.

The only way you gain life is if the lifelink creature actually deals damage.

The only way that could happen in this scenario is if you also gave Child of Night trample, because then AEtherling leaving the battlefield would cause it to deal all of its damage to your opponent.
