Do all generic mana sources now produce colorless?

Asked by Daemon6437 7 years ago

I know several cards that used to produce generic mana have been reprinted recently to produce "colorless" mana instead. Do all generic mana sources now produce colorless mana, or only the ones that have been reprinted with the symbol? For example, can I cast Kozilek, the Great Distortion with the mana produced by Rogue's Passage or Dread Statuary? For some reason I can't seem to find any rules or rulings that even address this.

Yes, the term generic mana is only used to represent part of costs. Mana has always been either one of the 5 colors, or colorless. But some costs must use colorless mana, which is the reason for the new symbol.

Generic mana was never a thing that was produced.

A key difference is that generic mana and colorless mana are two different things and always have been. Generic mana is only used in the costs of spells and abilities, while colorless mana can be produced, and now that it has its own symbol, can be put into the cost of something.

Everything that produced colorless mana in the past has since been errata'd to have the symbols instead of a number.

Great! This makes the green-black-colorless Eldrazi deck I'm messing around with much easier to manage! Thanks guys!
