Disdainful Stroke counter question

if i play a Genesis Hydra for x = 8 can my opponent counter it successfully with Disdainful Stroke .
i understand that if it does get countered i still revel the top 8 cards

Counter the ability? No, triggered (and activated) abilities are not spells.
Only something like Stifle can counter an ability.

Yes. In every zone except the stack, X is always equal to 0. On the stack however, X will be equal to the value determined when casting the spell. The Genesis Hydra in this case will have an X equal to 8, so the Hydra's CMC will be 10, making it a legal target for Disdainful Stroke .

Yes, you will. The ability triggers when you 'cast' Genesis Hydra , your opponent can't stop that. X is already determined when it triggers, so countering the Hydra spell won't affect the value of X.
